3/26/2018 0 Comments Weekly Update...3/26/18Good morning families,
I hope that all is well. This week we will not have homework due to students preparing for student led conferences. However, I have explained to students that they should still read for at least 20 minutes each night. Your children are excited to share their learning with you! Your child will have 20 minutes to share their writing, math, and music work. Due to time constraints please allow your child to share all their work before asking questions. Our learning targets this week include the following: Learning Targets: - I can prepare for my student led conference. - I can add and subtract within 1000. - I can solve word problems within 1000. - I can identify GA historical figures and their contribution to our state and the world at large. I hope that you all have a wonderful week and restful Spring Break next week. Thank you, Mrs. Burns

I enjoyed hearing about your weekends this morning during our y'all know what about the weekend during crew meeting. I heard all about the sleepovers, sneaking candy from parents, and touching chicken organs :) This week well spend some time preparing for our student-led conferences next week. If you haven't already please make sure you sign-up for your child's conference via the link provided in last week's post. Students must complete a different activity of their choice each night (totaling 4 activities by Friday) and make sure to include their work within their homework folders. I hope that you all enjoyed your winter break! The children proudly shared what they did last week during our Y'all Know What About Winter Break this morning? This week in reading we will compare and contrast various versions of different folktales from different authors and cultures. During math we will review using various strategies to add with and without regrouping, but this time within 1000. For writing we will continue with our persuasive writing unit. Many parents have asked about weekly spelling tests to help students improve their spelling. The problem that I often run into with weekly spelling tests is that students only memorize the spelling of the assigned words for that week and don't really have an understanding of the actual spelling patterns presented. After a little research and consulting with other teachers, I believe I have come up with a solution to help our students continue to grow as spellers. Starting today, each Monday students will complete a pretest of 10 words that follow a specific spelling pattern (This week is Silent E). If students score 80% or more they will be assigned the challenge list to study throughout the week in class and at home. If students score below 80% they will be assigned the regular weekly list to study throughout the week at school and home. During class we will look closely at spelling patterns of words and sort words according to their spelling patterns together in small groups and independently, in addition to playing games on SpellingCity.com via my link https://www.spellingcity.com/users/ShiraBurns. Students are more than welcome to play these games at home too, but please be sure that they are playing games for their list. These games should be available for students tomorrow (2/27). On Fridays, within small groups students will complete their post test of the 10 words they studied throughout the week and 10 additional words that follow the weeks spelling pattern. The reason students will have 10 additional words on their spelling tests each week is to ensure they are applying the spelling pattern for that week and avoiding only memorizing the assigned words. For homework, you will notice a spelling sheet within your child's homework packet. Students are to complete all 4 spelling activities by Friday, when homework is due. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me. Have a great week, Mrs. Burns 2/5/2018 0 Comments Weekly Update...2/5/18Greeting families,

Happy Holidays, -SB 12/11/2017 0 Comments Weekly Update...12/11/17Hello all,
I hope that you and your family enjoyed the expected (but, really unexpected) snow this past weekend. I enjoyed hearing your children talk about all the fun they had in the snow whether they were building snowmen or having snowball fights with neighbors or family :) This week we will spend lots of time creating the website to show all that we've learned about the sun, moon, and stars. I'm pretty excited to be doing this work with your children. They too are ecstatic to share their learning with you and the children whom we will be donating the website to. Each of them are such kind little people that strive to make the world a better place and I absolutely LOVE it! In reading students will learn how to identify and use adjectives and adverbs. In math we will show what we've learned about addition and subtraction within 100 with and without regrouping and begin learning how to tell time to the nearest 5 minutes. Friendly Reminders: ***Our Celebration of Learning will begin at 8:30a on Wednesday, December 20th in W.E.'s auditorium. Afterward we will move into our classrooms for students to share their expedition journals and the website with you. You will need to obtain a visitor's pass from the front office before reporting to the auditorium. Our Celebration of Learning will end promptly at 9:30a. ***The Winter Celebration willl begin at 12:45p and end at 1:45p on Thursday, December 21st. Please check your emails for information from our room parents regarding this celebration and items you can sign-up to donate for this celebration. I plan to show The Polar Express this day as well. Please let me know if you'd rather your child not participate in the viewing of this movie. ***Winter Marketplace (Repurposing with a Purpose). Please see the email sent last week for in depth information regarding this 2nd/3rd grade initiative. Please have your child bring in items to be donated this Friday, December 15th. Thank you! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me. Have a wonderful week! -SB 12/4/2017 0 Comments Weekly Update...12/4/17Good morning families,

MAP testing is officially over, however a lot of the children took our advice, took their time, and did not finish during their first sitting. YAY! They will pulled sometime today and tomorrow to finish and or make-up (if they were absent from school) their test. Our Celebration of Learning (related to expedition) is Wed., Dec. 20th @ 8:30a.
